The G7 health ministers are meeting on Thursday 3rd and Friday the 4th of June. They are discussing the "sharing" of vaccine doses to the poorest countries. Next week’s G7 meeting is expected to approve a decision on the matter. The plan proposed by Britain is still based on the production of vaccines by the ONLY FIRMS holding the patents. The decision whether to lift patents cannot be excluded from a democratic decision process: we call on parliaments across Europe to ensure this utterly important issue is urgently taken up at their level.

On World Health Day, April 7, civil society organisations, trade unions, and health activists organised actions across Europe to demand that vaccines and treatment against COVID-19 are made available to everyone. In addition, demands have been made to improve working conditions in the health sector and to invest more in public health.

Health activists throughout Europe are asking European leaders to make sure that COVID-19 vaccines are available to everyone, everywhere and in due time. No one is safe until everyone is safe. Across Europe several actions took place on, before and after World Health Day, april 7 in support of the European Citizens Initiative- Right2Cure for accesible vaccins for all!

In light of the upcoming World Health Day on April 7, in an open letter, drafted by the European Network and People’s Health Movement and signed by 88 civil society organisations across Europe, European institutions and governments are called upon to take their responsibility and adapt the global vaccination strategy to ensure that everyone, across the world gets access to COVID-19 vaccines in due time.

On April 7 - the International Day of Health - the European Health Network an People Health Movement together with the European Citizens Initiative (ECI) Right2cure are organising a day of action in Europe to mobilise people and put pressure on governments and pharmaceutical companies to demand accessible vaccines for everyone and ensure the profit logic does no prevail over health!

More than 100 countries already support the proposal by India and South Africa at the WTO to temporarily remove intellectual property rights to effectively combat the coronavirus epidemic and ensure equitable access to vaccines. The European Network calls on European governments and the European Commission to support this proposal.

This proposal is brought as a solution to the delays announced by vaccine manufacturers Pfizer/BioNTech and AstraZeneca, which have led to delays in vaccination campaigns in several European member states.

Every year, the European Network organizes actions on 7 April, World Health Day. We call it the Day of Action against the Commercialization of Health. At the same time we also try to reach our European representatives with our analyses and demands. This year, we planned a conference in the European Parliament. But the COVID-19 crisis was one step ahead of us. On the occasion of the "white sheet" action on 7 April, which we organize as an alternative to our annual actions, we submitted a number of topical questions to Brando Benifei, italian MEP for the European socialists, who answered our questions willingly. He shines light on how the Socialists will position themselves within the European Parliament.

This year, we planned a conference in the European Parliament together with Petra De Sutter on the accessibility of health. But the CODIV-19 crisis was one step ahead of us. As an alternative on our annual actions we are organizing a white sheet action and submitted a number of questions to Petra De Sutter, who answered our questions very willingly. She gives us some working points for which the European Greens, in response to this sanitary crisis, will fight for within the European Parliament.

Today, more than ever, it is urgent to act. The COVID-19 outbreak shows us the importance of coordinated action. What we need now is a strong solidarity-based health system for all and coordination that surpasses national borders, with effective action on a European and a global level.

We have decided to cancel all physical gatherings and actions for this year’s 7 April.

The mission of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) is the efficacy testing and the ongoing supervision of medicines for the benefit of citizen health in the European Union.

In spite of the clear relevance of an institution like the EMA, the rules governing its functioning and their compliance with health protection goals have never been given a priority in the political agenda, even by the left wing forces.

The Italian branch of the European Network propose several recommandations on how to improve this European agency which has a great impact on national health systems and the cost of medecines.
